I have a care credit care with synchrony bank. I have had this card for several years, with no problems. However on my last billing cycle I had an undeferred ( due in 25 days ) amount of $110.00 charged on -/-/- and a deferred amount for $83.00 ( due to expire -/-/-. I also was carrying a deferred interest charge ( due to expire -/-/- ) of $230.00. I wanted to avoid interest so I paid $190.00 on -/-/- ( the underferred amount of $110.00 plus the soon to expire $83.00 ). When I received my statement for this current cycle there was a $2.00 service fee and a balance of $25.00 from the -/-/- charge. I called the company on -/-/- and asked why they did that as they had never misunderstood my intentions before. I was told I had to call and tell then to apply the payment to the undeferred amount. They said they had to follow federal guidelines and apply these amounts as they did. From what I can read on the Federal guidelines a company must allocate a payment in such a way as to minimize customer interest and fees. This is not what has happened. There was no reason to apply any of this payment to the $230.00 amount as it was not due to expire for another 10 months. I find this reprehensible and an unfair practice as regards the consumer. I called the - card people today ( who are also with Synchrony Financal ) and they told me I could not direct them to apply my payment to the undeferred part of that card until the payment posted so I would have to call them back. They could NOT put a note on my account indicating that was my intent with the payment I sent them.
