Credit monitoring or identity protection Problem with fraud alerts Texas
My wife and I were victims of tax fraud. When we discovered this, we immediately did credit freezes on our credit files for all - credit bureaus. We were charged for - credit freezes. Per Texas law, if a credit freeze is initiated due to identity theft, the credit freezes should be free. I did not want to wait a week or more to generate a police report, get a copy and then send it in to the credit bureaus for a free report. Instead, I did the credit freezes immediately. I then requested refunds from the credit bureaus due to identity theft. - issues refunds immediately. - refunds are in process. Transunion, on the other hand, had refused, saying that the only way you can get a free credit freeze is by submitting a police report at the time you have requested the credit freeze. First of all, when you have become a victim of identity theft, you want to deal with it right away, and deal with the refunds later. Second, it would take up to a week to process the police report and get it to them to do the credit freeze. During that week, how many times might your credit report be used without your permission since someone now has your social security number? I believe, and will always believe, that we are due a refund. I will attempt to dispute the charge with my credit card but am not optimistic.
