For 32 years we were a loyal, dedicated, exclusive customer for American Express. We paid them about $100000.00 per year on average ( sometimes way more ). We used their Rewards Program sparingly, and only when absolutely necessary ( for example to pay for a last minute critical airfare ). According to them, -/-/2015 they revised the Rewards program we participated in. According to them we were notified multiple times via mail. Nobody here recalls seeing anything. The new revised program required us " opting in '' to maintain our point balance of -. The fee was going from $110.00 per year to $170.00, which for us would be no problem. According to them, by not " opting in '' we reverted to a non-reward program at $95.00 per year but would lose all accumulated reward points. As I said, we never knew anything was taking place. A new card came at that time, but it was a chip bearing card and we assumed it to be just the chip making it necessary to send out. Last weekend, we found out by accident ( trying to book hotel rooms ) that " there were no points any more ''. They had cancelled and taken 32 years of accumulated reward points, - in all. In my words, they STOLE the rewards points. I find this HIGHLY unethical, mean spirited to a long time loyal customer, and bad business practice as they refused to reconstruct the program to what it was, even at maybe a nominal cost to me ( for missing something I NEVER saw ). So that 's how American Express treats it 's great long time customers. Let 's let everyone know. This looks like a nice plan to get rid of as many open Rewards points as possible without honoring their intent. Great management decision.
