Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Need information about my balance/terms California

I enrolled at - - College -/-/- ( now - College ), graduated -/-/- and borrowed $48000.00 from American Education Services to complete the program. Like most private loans its a standard variable interest non subsidized loan. Currently my balance is $47000.00. I did get laid off within the 8 year period and was unable to make about 8 payments but have been faithful on the other, roughly, 88 payments. I have made over $29000.00 in payments to the company ; I do n't understand how my balance has only dropped by $1000.00. I call and can not get a direct answer from the company. PLEASE HELP me! I am desperate to get out of debt but at this rate I 'll never see the end.
