In 2008 I moved in to a basement apartment in -, GA. When I called to set up the utilities with Georgia - - they put my name on both the upstairs dwelling and the basement apartment. I was only renting the basement apartment. I found out about this because I started getting bills for both units. I contacted Georgia - - to resolve the issue and they never corrected it. I contacted the owner of the dwelling multiple times. He only complained about how horrible the company is to work with and said he would see what he could do. When I moved - months later I closed the account associated with my unit. The other account was not yet sorted out. I told the landlord about the issue and left it in his hands. Fast forward to the present. I have been working on improving my credit. I ran a report on myself to find that the bill is still unpaid and still in my name. Now a collections company is contacting me to collect the debt. The debt is not mine. It appears to be an error from the customer service representative who worked on setting up my account seven years ago. I am upset that a data entry error is now negatively impacting my credit.
