A visa credit card issued by Citi accepted a charge from a merchant who had either an incorrect credit card number or expiration date that passed or both. When I called to inquire how it could happen they said that for some select merchants who allegedly submit recurring charges there is a special treatment when it comes to changed credit card numbers and expiration dates that have passed - they are provided with new credit card info so that they can continue to bill. I suggested that this was done without my consent, that the agreement is between the credit card company and the merchant and not with cardholder, that no cardholder can possibly understand dozens of pages of fine print with changing rules. I demanded that Citi remove the charge from my account and pay for it themselves. That it was unfair for them to violate the most fundamental security feature of the credit card and allow merchants to bill with wrong credit card number or past expiration date or both. I further explained that expired credit cards is what should prevent looters like the merchant in question to perpetrate inappropriate charges and contact consumer with a request for a new billing information. As an aside the card in question is not in my posession and I believe it was cancelled. When I asked them to tell me what was the expiration date on the active card it date when it was issued. As a result I can not even present the merchant with a proof that they did something inappropriate - bill with a wrong credit card information and get a new credit card info from Citi when both of them realized that credit card number or expitation date changed.
