Non-federal student loan Can't repay my loan Can't decrease my monthly payments Maryland
In - of this year I applied for a student loan consolidation with Wells Fargo to get a lower interest rate. My current loans were already with this bank, I had a good credit score and a cosigner so I figured it would n't be a difficult process. I was wrong. They offered an extremely high interest rate and could not give me an explanation as to why. After filing a complaint with the CFPB, they finally agreed to give me a 1 % discount on the consolidation. However, months later I realized that this is still not affordable for me. These past few months I have depleted my savings trying to pay these student loans and my other federal student loans. I asked for a temporary forbearance and was told the consolidation loan had to be at least 9 months old before I could be granted a forbearance. I then asked what my options were, because I am trying to avoid defaulting on my loans. The customer service rep encouraged me to apply for a loan modification instead, and if my loans were deemed un-affordable they would lower my monthly payment. I was told that upon reviewing my credit that my loans were actually affordable. This is not my reality and now I am forced to pay less than the minimum amount required because I can not afford to continue the payments I had been making. I do not want to default on these loans, but my servicer is not providing me with any other options at this time.
