Amex Credit card department,
Closing/Cancelling account Arizona
In -, I changed employment and called American Express to cancel a business card associated with my social security number that I was obligated to pay. The employee I spoke with at American Express convinced me not to cancel the card, but rather to " freeze '' the card, assuring me no future charges could ever be made against that card. In -, I get a notification that charge for $1000.00 was posted to my " frozen '' credit card. I called American Express customer service to inquire how a charge could be posted to my account after it had been frozen. They told me cards can not be frozen and that I would be responsible for the charge despite them having told me that no charges could be made on the card. Their supervisor even went so far as to say they may not be able to retrieve the recorded phone call wherein American Express communicated that the card would be frozen and no future charges could be made against the card - convenient. It appears to me that American Express is trying to retain customers at the customers expense and against the customer 's wishes.
