Amex Credit card department,
American Express is not abiding by the disclosure requirement in the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility Disclosure Act of 2009 involving Applying Payments. Per - giving a narrative on this stipulation : Highest interest balances paid first : When consumers have accounts that carry different interest rates for different types of purchases ( i.e., cash advances, regular purchases, balance transfers or ATM withdrawals ), payments in excess of the minimum amount due must go to balances with higher interest rates first. A common practice in the industry had been to apply all amounts over the minimum monthly payments to the lowest-interest balances first - thus extending the time it takes to pay off higher-interest rate balances. I have called American Express asking them about this, and a representative informed me that they do not always follow the above stipulation. The call was recorded on their end as they have previously stated, so the individual making this comment is on tape. American Express did not apply the excess amount of the $750.00 payment I recently made to the Cash Advance Balance but instead appeared to apply it completely towards the Purchases balance even though Purchases have an introductory Interest Rate of 0 % for 12 months. The minimum payment due was $170.00. $580.00 should have gone towards the Cash Advance Balance, which either less or none of that amount went to the Cash Advance Balance. No agent I spoke with at their organization was able to answer as to why this happened.
