A thief stole almost $10000.00 from our checking account at Citibank by impersonating my wife with a fake ID and cashing - forged checks against our balance at - different branches in late - / early - of this year. Citibank notified us about the fraud, so we went to a local branch where we signed an affidavit stating we were n't involved in this scheme and provided all the information required for Citibank to process this claim. The branch manager, with whom we met for about two hours that day, told us Citibank would credit the stolen funds in a matter of days. It 's now been almost a month since then and Citibank has n't restored the money to our account. Now they 're saying their investigation could take up to 90 days because of the nature of the fraud, with no ETA on when or even if we 're going to get our money back. We think it 's wrong that Citibank is withholding this money, which we need, when the only reason why it 's missing is due to their lax and negligent security safeguards and practices. For example, apparently Citibank made no effort to verify
bother to verify if these checks the thief presented to the tellers were valid and legitimate before handing over almost $10000.00 in cash from our account to a criminal. In addition, Citibank should have flagged these transactions as suspect the moment the thief tried to pull them off because we 've had this checking account for almost 20 years, and we never conducted such a transaction, namely showing up with - checks issued to us by - third parties, and cashing them right then and there. We want Citibank to acknowledge its failure in protecting our money from this criminal and credit the stolen funds to our account immediately.
