JPMorgan Chase & Co. Credit card department,
I applied for a Chase - - business card. I was told I have " a good credit file. '' ( I know from independent checking that my credit score is over -. ) I have no late payments or over-limit spending. I was denied because Chase said I have received too many credit cards from other banks in the past two years, even though they could not tell me what number of cards is too high because, they answered, there is no set number. It could be -, or -, or -. It could be different for each applicant ; meaning that the criteria is completely arbitrary and can be implemented in a discriminatory manner. They could not articulate why the number of different cards I have received and used responsibly provides any indication of credit unworthiness. ( I continue to receive credit card offers in the mail. ) Chase said the decision is " not reviewable '' and there is no recourse. I asked : with which regulatory body I could file a complaint? Chase said my complaint was not a " regulatory issue, '' so there was no government agency with which to file a complaint, but offered only the -. Chase said they could take an internal complaint, but could not tell me of any impact or process that complaints generate, other than that they are sent to an " escalation '' department. But I would receive no response, clarification, review, reconsideration, etc. Chase 's credit-issuing criteria are very non-transparent, arbitrary, and potentially discriminatory.
