I am a co-signer on my daughter 's private Student Loans with Citibank. I recently found out when applying for a loan that my daughter has defaulted on her obligation to the loan due to high monthly payments. The loan has apparently been marked as Charged Off and it has severely affected my credit. I never received anything in writing from the lender indicating the default, the balance owed, the late payments, or asking me to pay, etc. I was never given the opportunity to satisfy the debt. The loan is many years old and I had no idea that my daughter was struggling with maker her payments. I think it should be mandatory that creditors provide the defaulted account information in writing to the co-signer to give them a chance to rectify. It seems like a very unfair process.
