Grocery store located 2 states away notified me that an employee found " my '' debit card in the ATM machine. Card still has activation sticker and is issued to my old legal name. This debit card and associated account was obviously opened fraudulently. Have only the debit card number. Spoke with issuing bank ( Citibank ) and the most they would do was cancel the card. Citibank would not provide any further information, citing that they could not verify my account information or identity, nor would they at least freeze the account pending an investigation. They then directed me to contact - and led me to believe it was within Citibank. Turns out it is FTC. I have already placed a fraud alert through a credit reporting agency and looked at 2 of my credit reports for any suspicious information. Since the credit reporting agencies deal with credit and not with bank accounts, - advised me to contact the Consumer Financial Bureau, from which I was advised that I could file a complaint. I think Citibank ought to at least freeze the account in question pending a thorough investigation. Canceling the debit card while helpful is insufficient action since the card was already abandoned. I also need to know when, where & how the account was opened for reporting & investigative purposes. I can not track down the perpetrator ( s ) and press charges if I can not find that person ( s ).
