Amex Credit Card Complaint

Rewards

Amex Credit card department,

Rewards North Carolina

I signed up for the American Express Platinum card offer of - points for $3000.00 spend in the first three months. This application was submitted and approved on - -, 2016. The points became available in my account on - -, 2016. After being unable to use them, I was advised my account was under review and would take 6-8 weeks to process. After 8 weeks, on - -, 2016, I had American Express submit an escalation. On - -, 2016, I finally received a voicemail to call in. When I called in, I was told my points were removed for not fulfilling the terms in receiving the points. Originally, I was told, by representative -, that even though I had over $3000.00 in qualifying purchases it was because I had some non-qualifying purchases in there and it had to be the FIRST $3000.00. This is not consistent with the terms, so we escalated to a Manager, -. The Manager informed me that they do not know the exact decision, but there are no ways to appeal or speak with someone regarding that decision.

Throughout this process, American Express never sent any communication to me to inform that my account was under review or what the status of this review was. I needed to call in to find out any details. Only once my final escalation was resolved did I receive a voicemail to ask me to call in. At this point, the decision was made. I was never afforded any opportunity to discuss my situation with American Express. Even if there was not enough of qualifying spend, the practice of awarding the points early and then creating a window of review that goes beyond the qualifying window is very deceptive. If points are later taken back, and extension should be granted to allow the customer to make up the difference.
