Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Received bad information about my loan Maryland

in 2000 I was approached by student loan officials at the University - at - Maryland where my son was attending at that time. I was was told this was a " parent plus loan '' that it was for the student in their name but that the parents were simply cosigners. that was the exact terms used. now these NASTY collection companies are calling me and sending these nasty letters to me. the original loan was for something like $3500.00 now this collection is sending threatening letters to me telling me they will garnishment my wages for the now amount of $7500.00. this was NEVER understood to be my loan. I have not talked to my son in over 7 years and I do not even know where he lives or works..
