During the mortgage process I asked the lender to match the rate of the competitor. They obliged my request but failed to disclose that they obtained that rate not by matching it but by having me pay points to buy the lower rate. It was not broken out separately in the closing documents and was only brought to my attention when the tax statement for points paid arrived.
