Closing/Cancelling account Virginia

I used a Discover card for several years and finally got it paid off. I called and asked them to close the account. They said they had, but I continued to receive statements every couple months despite not using the card ( I destroyed it ). After a few months I called again and requested that they close my account. I still continue to receive statements ( just got one today ) and it 's been well over a year.
