I was an account holder of the Chase - Visa card. One of the perks is that you receive Marriott Gold Elite Status as long as you spend $10000.00 in an account year. I met that requirement for -/-/-, and received Marriott Gold Elite Status -/-/-. I spoke with a Chase account rep -/-/- who confirmed I may close my account and not lose the status. I closed the Chase account, and lost the status.
