Other mortgage Loan modification,collection,foreclosure Georgia

Wells Fargo has both our first mortgage and our second mortgage classified as Home Equity loans. They will not give me a reason as too why both of our loans are classified home equity loan. I understand the second mortgage being classified as a Home Equity loan but do not understand legally how the first mortgage can be classified as a Equity loan as well. This is a major factor in allowing for a refinance or a modification in which we are in need of and repeatedly are denied.
