Credit card Cont'd attempts collect debt not owed Debt is not mine Texas

My mother died -/-/2014 and left an unpaid credit card. I went into the store to pay it and learned that they had written it off. ( excused the debt ) When I got home my wife said a collection company called and wanted payment for that same debt. She did n't know it had been written off by the original company and she agreed to pay it. She gave them a check by phone to be cashed a few days later. I stopped payment on the check as soon as I learned what she did. The collection company is AscensionPoint Services. They have continued to call me and my wife on our personal phones and her work phone. They say we are n't responsible for the debt but they keep calling. I researched AscensionPoint and found numerous pages of complaints on them being a scam and not to pay them anything.
