GE Capital Retail Credit card department,
I have a GAP Visa credit card issued by Synchrony Bank. Synchrony allowed a transaction to go through that exceeded my credit limit. We were not notified and did not realize this happened until the next time we tried to use the card and it was declined. We immediately made a payment that more than covered the overcharge. However, the bank notified credit agencies that we exceeded our limit prior to receiving the payment. I called the bank to complain and asked how we can be reported for exceeding our limit when the bank authorized the payment. This makes no sense whatsoever! I was told that as a courtesy '' the bank allows a certain amount of charges over my credit limit. I consider this a discourtesy, as I would have used a different credit card had I known that I had exceeded my limit. I asked the bank to have this courtesy service deactivated, and I was told this is not possible. I wonder how many other consumers have their credit damaged as a result of this courtesy. '' Consumers should either have the right to have this service turned off, or the bank should be obligated to notify the consumer that their credit has been exceeded. I was told that this service is explained in my credit terms, but if it was, it was not called out prominently.
