Synchrony Bank 's payment scheduling system changes the customer 's chosen payment posting date if any part of the payment detail is changed. I have noticed an issue where Synchrony Bank credit accounts change a payment scheduled date ( chosen by customer ) to the payment due date, if the payment amount is edited. Example : Amazon Store credit : $94.00 due by -/-/15. Initially chose to pay minimum $96.00 on - ( date funds available and date scheduled ). Advanced to confirmation page, but decided to increase payment amount slightly. When clicked edit payment '' button, reverted to payment page, $96.00 selected payment amount still selected ( not changed to minimum due ), but payment DATE ( posting date ) reverted from -/-/15 initially SELECTED to DUE date of -. Edited amount to $100.00, did n't catch ( as I have many, MANY other times ) that the date changed to - - due date ). Did not realize the date changed until checking my bank account that all payments scheduled for - had cleared and noticed the payment that I thought to my Amazon account had not yet posted. While likely quite small per individual customer, this issue potentially allows Synchrony Bank to charge/earn significantly more interest ( illegitimately ) across their portfolio because the customer 's average daily balance is higher due to the payment posting later in the month. A later posting date results in a higher average daily balance, and therefore interest charge, for each customer affected. A mere $.00 additional interest for - account holders results in a additional $50000.00 increase in interest earnings for the company. - customers at $0.00 each = $250000.00 additional income that is earned through a system with a significant flaw ( if not intentional process ).
